Journalists Attacked in Chechnya: Novaya Gazeta’s Yelena Milashina and Alexander Nemov

Novaya Gazeta journalist Yelena Milashina and lawyer Alexander Nemov, who were attacked a day earlier in Chechnya by unidentified armed men, flew on a special plane to Moscow from Beslan, along with editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov and journalist Alexei Venediktov. About it reported in the telegram channel of Novaya Gazeta.

Milashina and Nemov flew to Grozny on July 4 for the announcement sentencing Zarema Musaeva, mother of persecuted Chechen activists Abubakar, Ibragim and Baysangur Yangulbaev, and wife of former Supreme Court judge Saidi Yangulbaev.

As Sergei Babinets, chairman of the “Team Against Torture”, who was also in Grozny on July 4, told Current Time, the lawyer and the journalist were attacked while they were riding in a taxi from the airport to Grozny. According to Babinets, the airport is close to the city, and the route goes through a busy area with administrative buildings. But the car on the road was still blocked by armed men in black balaclavas.

Milashina and Nemov were severely beaten, including kicked and with polypropylene pipes, while the journalist’s hair was shaved off and green paint was poured over her face. Also Milashina and Nemov’s equipment was taken away and destroyed after they refused to unlock their phones and computers.

On Tuesday evening, the attack on Elena Milashina and Alexander Nemov was commented on by the Chechen authorities. “We’ll figure it out. I instructed the competent services to make every effort to identify the attackers,” said the head of the republic, Ramzan Kadyrov.

In turn, Chechen Press Minister Akhmed Dudayev, commenting on the attack, declaredthat in the case one can trace “the characteristic handwriting of Western intelligence services.”

Ombudsman of Chechnya Mansur Soltaev informedthat the attackers on Milashina and Nemov have not yet been found, as they were traveling in a car without license plates.

The Investigative Committee of Russia has launched an investigation into what happened to Elena Milashina and Alexander Nemov, but nothing is known about the initiation of a criminal case.
