Journalist Tom Kleijn has become the winner of the 22nd season of The smartest person. He won in the final against musical actress Nandi van Beurden and theater director Jörgen Tjon A Fong.
Van Beurden was the first to drop out, allowing Kleijn and Tjon A Fong to battle it out. The journalist eventually won with an answer about Bonaire (‘municipality’) and was then showered with confetti.
“That felt awkward,” he says on the website of broadcaster KRO-NCRV. “I’m a journalist and I always think: it’s not about me.”

In the broadcast he thanked his 14-year-old son, who had persuaded him to participate in the program. “Whatever discussion we have: I’m right,” Kleijn joked.
The final had already been recorded earlier and Kleijn had only informed his girlfriend and mother about the win, his 14-year-old son was not informed. “I didn’t want him to have to keep his mouth shut for a week at school.”
Kleijn was presented with the cup by poet Martin Rombouts, who was named ‘The Smartest Person’ last winter season. The quiz on NPO 1 was the most watched broadcast on Dutch television almost every day last week.
