Journalist and bureau chief for Al Jazeera in Gaza City, Wael Al-Dahdouh, is a familiar face in the Gaza Strip. In recent weeks, he has been reporting on the suffering unfolding in his hometown.
Wednesday confirms the Arab media house Al Jazeera that Al-Dahdouh lost his immediate family in an attack in central Gaza on Wednesday. He himself was live on air when he received the message.

Moved to refugee camp
Both his wife and his children, including a seven-year-old girl, died in the attack. Several family members are still missing.
Al Jazeera has published images of Al-Dahdouh soon after, entering the hospital to see his deceased family.

– What happened is clear. This is a series of targeted attacks on children, women and civilians. I just reported from Yarmouk about such an attack, and the Israeli attacks have targeted many areas, including Nuseirat, says a shaken Al-Dahdouh to the channel.
– This is the “safe” place that the occupying army talked about, he added.

The family originally resided in Gaza City, but all but Al-Dahdouh moved to Nuseirat after Israel declared war as a result of Hamas’ attack on October 7. There they lived in a refugee camp to be with the rest of the family. Al-Dahdouh stayed behind to work.
Israel has not confirmed it was behind the attack that allegedly killed Al-Dahdouh’s family.
Condemns the attack
– He was shocked, says Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum about the colleague after he received the terrible message.
Pictures from the hospital show a crying husband and father.
– It is heartbreaking to report on Al-Dahdouh’s family and see how broken he is. He did not leave Gaza City. He stayed there, despite all threats and warnings. He did not stop working for 19 days. He said: “I have to be here in Gaza City to report on these people who are being bombed every day,” says his colleague Youmna Elsayed.
Several people in Al Jazeera have spoken out after the incident on Wednesday.

Journalist Safwat al-Kahlout has worked with Al-Dahdouh for over 20 years. He says that the Al-Dahdouh family was among the most famous in the Gaza Strip.
– Now is the moment Al-Dahdouh needs everyone around him. But unfortunately it is too dangerous to reach him and stay with him in these difficult times, he says.
Al Jazeera also says in an official statement that it condemns the attack that claimed the lives of Al-Dahdouh’s family.
– Al Jazeera expresses its sincere condolences to our colleague Wael Al-Dahdouh following the loss of his family. The indiscriminate attack by the Israeli occupation forces resulted in the tragic loss of his wife and child, while the rest of his family is buried under the rubble, they write.
