“O you who enjoy health, thank your Creator and stop grieving over the most trivial things.” With these words, the journalist specializing in technical affairs, Elie Merheb, summarized his pain and health condition that forced him to stay in intensive care for 40 days.
Only those who have tasted the cup know pain, and many will only know the blessing of health when they lose it or face a health setback. The saying “the most important thing is health” was not just a saying, but rather more like a prayer, because health means life.
Eli’s journey was not easy from the beginning. He had to face illness and health problems early, and the first confrontation was at the age of five when his family discovered that he had kidney problems.
“The journey was arduous, including treatments and medications, until Elie reached a dead end.” In a voice heavy with fatigue, his brother Charbel narrates details of his health developments and his psychological and physical condition.
Charbel goes back about 8 years ago, “Eli was forced to undergo a kidney transplant after his health condition deteriorated. From time to time, he faced complications that put him in the hospital for days to receive the required treatments and maintain the stability of his condition. But these medical interventions were like a “morphine needle.” “To buy time until his health deteriorated dramatically.”
For 40 days, Elie entered the intensive care room and did not leave it, from one health problem to another. His condition represented a new challenge for the doctors, who confirmed that Elie’s condition is very rare, and the complications that he sometimes faces are not common.
His brother Charbel explains, “A group of complications befell Elie, from infections to the presence of water in the lungs and heart, all the way to contracting an infection called Cryptosporidium that we have no longer heard of since 1985. It is a single-celled parasite that causes pollution in the intestines and leads to a bout of watery diarrhea. The infection usually disappears.” “Within a week or two, but if you have a weak immune system, a hidden infection can become life-threatening without treatment.”
This is what happened with Elie, who suffers from a weakened immune system as a result of kidney failure, damage to healthy kidneys and a decline in their function, which prompted the doctors to subject him to dialysis sessions, which amounted to 6 sessions until one hour.
Eli is spinning in a vicious circle. No sooner does he end up with one health problem than he begins another. His body is exhausted as a result of the successive setbacks it is exposed to. His brother Charbel does not hide that he is “psychologically tired. For 40 days, he has been fighting a battle in which he has not yet reached safety. Elie’s medical condition raises many question marks. After consulting and forming a medical committee to follow up on his condition, the best option was to work to stabilize his health condition and secure the amount.” What is required is to be able to travel and go to specialized kidney centers to deal with his condition in a better way.”
The family, as well as the doctors, know that Elie’s condition and its complications require specialized treatment and long medical follow-up, and his family hopes to secure $75,000 as a first step for a treatment that will require a greater expense and a longer time. The family wants to take it step by step and not get ahead of things. Their concern today, according to Charbel, is “traveling abroad to receive the most appropriate treatment for his condition, especially since it is one of a million cases with complications, in light of the presence of advanced equipment and modern medicines that are not available in Lebanon and the region.” Our hope is to save him and our cry today is To help him get his chance for treatment.”
