Journalist Anton Hekimyan announced on Saturday that he was leaving bTV, and the television announced that they accept his resignation with “immediate effect”. The surprising news has opened a wide field for interpretations of what lies behind the change. There was even a version on social networks that he will be the long-awaited nomination of GERB for candidate for mayor of Sofia, for which Boyko Borisov was carefully waiting for the end of Mercury retrograde. In addition, there were reports that he might announce a major news project in the rival Nova TV, which were later denied. BTV says that the resignation is “as a result of his decision to continue in another professional direction”.
Until now, Hekimyan was the director of “News, Current Affairs and Sports”. Before that, he was a reporter and anchor of the morning block.
Hekimyan talks about challenges:
“I can’t hide that the decision to take another direction is extremely difficult. But anyone who really knows me knows that I love challenges and I’m not afraid“.
So far, it is not clear who will take the leadership position. Initially, bTV CEO Ralf Bartoalit will be responsible for the news content together with the editor-in-chief of news Veselin Petrakieva, of current affairs Iskra Vladimirova and the manager of web content Vladislava Lazarova. Bartolait has experience as a political editor – he worked at the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” and was a correspondent in Moscow for DPA, bTV said.
There is no information about Hekimyan’s future. Immediately there were rumors that he could occupy a high position in the main competitor of bTV – Nova TV. From there, they told Mediapool that they had not sent him an invitation.
The other rumor is that Hekimyan may be the candidate for mayor of Sofia, nominated by GERB. There is no confirmation of this information. A few days ago, the leader of the party, Boyko Borisov, commented that the nominee would have been a “non-standard decision”.
