“When people see me, they call me the journalist, the president, the radio host. I feel more free; I realized that I am important to society” – Aisha, 17 years old”
Aisha is a popular radio journalist in Mali. Through our Youth Talk project, funded by the Bezos Family Foundation, Aisha, along with over 100 young people in Mali, South Sudan and the Central African Republic, received training in radio journalism and conflict reporting places to help people find common ground. .
Mali, South Sudan and the Central African Republic all recently signed peace agreements, the terms of which were largely negotiated by adult elites. Despite being the majority, young people in these countries often lack the means to contribute to these processes and participate in the decisions that affect their lives. They are often seen as passive spectators, as opposed to active agents of change who possess incredible power to build peace, bridge gaps and develop solutions.
Youth Talk changes that dynamic. These young journalists are not just children who have learned new skills. They are powerful voices changing attitudes and culture in their communities and countries, inspiring others to build safer and more just societies.
