DROGEHAM – Jouke Spoelstra from Drogeham will become mayor of the municipality of Westerveld from May. This municipality is located below Oosterwolde and has well-known places such as Vledder and Dwingeloo. The municipality is located in the province of Drenthe.
Spoelstra is currently an alderman for the CDA in the municipality of Achtkarspelen. He has held this position since 2016. Before that he was a councilor.
The 34-year-old Spoelstra was told on Wednesday evening that he has been chosen as the new mayor of the municipality. He and his family are moving to the municipality of Westerveld.
The new mayor was chosen from 27 candidates. Eight of the applicants are members of the VVD, six of the CDA, four of the PvdA, one member of the Christian Union and one is a member of a local party. Seven of those interested are not members of a political party or have not mentioned one.
According to the confidential committee, Spoelstra is the best candidate because he is enthusiastic, connecting and approachable. “Spoelstra is someone who knows how to connect with humor and genuine interest, he is someone who sees the power of villages and knows how to use them.” He is further described as a ‘real country man’.
The Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations must ultimately approve the appointment. Spoelstra is expected to be sworn in in May 2024.
