Joshua Tarling became European time trial champion for the first time on Wednesday in Emmen. The British top talent remained well ahead of the competition.
Tarling, who was only nineteen, completed the 29.8 kilometer course to and from Emmen in 31 minutes and 30 seconds. The Welshman left the Swiss defending champion Stefan Bissegger (second) and the Belgian Wout van Aert (third) more than forty seconds behind him.
Last month, Tarling surprised at the World Time Trial Championships in Stirling, British. The INEOS Grenadiers rider then took the bronze in front of his own audience. He finished behind Evenepoel (first) and Filippo Ganna (second), both of whom did not participate in Emmen. Later in August, Tarling won the time trial in the Renewi Tour.
Daan Hoole was the best Dutchman at the European Time Trial Championships in seventh place. The 24-year-old Trek-Segafredo rider gave in to Tarling for almost a minute and a half. Sjoerd Bax was seven seconds slower than Hoole and finished tenth.
The European Championship turned out to be a drama for Stefan Küng. The Swiss, who became European champion in 2020 and 2021, came into contact with a crush barrier and fell hard. With his face covered in blood, Küng finished eleventh.
Earlier in the day, Swiss Marlen Reusser became European women’s time trial champion for the third time in a row. The women will ride their road race on Saturday. It’s the men’s turn on Sunday.
