NEW JERSEY – Days after winning re-election, New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer announced his intention to run for governor in next year’s gubernatorial race.
The five-time Democratic congressman made his candidacy official at the Runway Diner Friday morning in South Hackensack, where he announced his candidacy for the 2025 election.
Gottheimer currently represents New Jersey’s 5th Congressional District, which includes the northern border of the state, stretching from New York City to the Pennsylvania border. The area includes Bergen County, as well as parts of Passaic and Sussex.
The Democratic gubernatorial primary field is becoming increasingly crowded. Two mayors are already in the race: Ras Baraka of Newark and Steve Fulop of Jersey City. Gottheimer will also face his House colleague, Rep. Mikie Sherrill, and state teachers union president Steve Sweeney.
Gottheimer has been a vocal opponent of New York’s congestion pricing, a long-delayed plan that was recently revived and is now set to begin Jan. 5. The congressman joins other New Jersey leaders, including Gov. Current Phil Murphy, in hopes of the upcoming tax in New York designed to fund the MTA.
“In these times of inflation, we will not stand by while New York tries again to hit Jersey families with a new $9 toll. It will cost commuters thousands of dollars and is completely unconscionable.” normal,” Gottheimer said in a statement Thursday.
