On July 4, 1885, nine-year-old Joseph Meister leaves home as he does every morning. He happily walks the winding road to his school in Maisonsgoutte in the Alsace region of eastern France. But then everything changes in one fell swoop.
He is attacked by a mad dog foaming at the mouth.
The animal bites Joseph again and again, and the boy desperately tries to protect his face with his hands. A mason sees it happen. He comes running and manages to drive the dog away with an iron bar.
Bleeding and terrified, Joseph runs home to his mother, Marie Angelique. She fears the worst and immediately takes the boy to the doctor. He disinfected a total of 14 wounds on Joseph’s arms and legs with hydrogen peroxide. But both the doctor and Joseph’s mother know that this treatment can do nothing against the fate that awaits the boy.
The dog was undoubtedly infected with the rabies virus, which causes rabies. The disease is accompanied by severe pain, cramps, fever, fear of water and rage – until death occurs after a few days.
Only one man can possibly save Joseph, the doctor tells Marie Angelique. Joseph must immediately take the train to Paris to visit the world-famous chemist Louis Pasteur.
