The two countries share in the total funding of 1.5 billion euros of weapons, although Hungary does not allow them to pass through its territory, Borrell said in response to a question about whether he had seen a change in their position:
“These countries participate in the financing of the weapons that the EU supplies to Ukraine through its member states. If they did not participate, this would not be possible, because decisions are taken unanimously. So all 27 member states were unanimous and each of them finance its part”.
Borel defined in two words the Russian aggression against Ukraine as “failure and horror”. “They tried to take Kiev and were repulsed. And they leave behind massacred civilians, destroyed cities after indiscriminate shelling like at Kramatorsk station,” he stressed, declaring that the strike on Kramatorsk station last week was not even a military act. but a pure crime.
Borrell also said that ministers today discussed disinformation and Russian propaganda about the war, such as the spread of claims that sanctions against Moscow are the cause of rising prices and expected food shortages.
Borel accused Russian troops of knowingly causing world hunger:
“They are bombing and destroying grain stocks and preventing its export. A large number of ships cannot leave Ukrainian ports. In practice, they are causing world hunger by blocking ships and destroying warehouses in Ukraine.”
Ministers have discussed with the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, how to hold Russia accountable for its serious violation of international law by documenting war crimes. The Prosecutor General of Ukraine Iryna Venediktova also participated via video link.
For the countries that do not use Russian gas, it is easy to say that they can do without it, Borel also stated.
He noted that new sanctions against Russia are being prepared and nothing is excluded. According to him, the imposition of an embargo on the import of Russian oil and gas is being discussed, but no decision has been taken today. He says it is more likely to limit or stop oil imports first because it is four times more valuable and more easily replaceable.
Even if we stop importing gas tomorrow, it will not prevent the expected attack of the Russian troops in the coming days and weeks. The measures we are discussing are medium-term, Borel explained. He pointed out that the way out for the EU is in renewable energy.
