Pure flamenco. This is how we can define the show that the singer José Mercé offered during the afternoon-night of yesterday at the Santo Tomás Theater, where some 400 people from Ávila attended to surrender to the art and the duende of the genius of Jerez de la Frontera, one of the greats masters and legends of this musical genre. Not in vain, he has 18 albums and an impressive career behind him.
Accompanied by the Spanish guitar, his choir, his group of clappers and the percussionists, José Mercé gave a night full of passion, rhythm and emotion to Ávila, a city that he has visited on several occasions and of which the Jerez native always keeps great memories. for “being a very warm audience”, as he commented in a recent interview with this newspaper. Mercé sang a selection of his best-known songs, including versions by artists such as Joaquín Sabina, Louis Armstrong or Víctor Jara, among many others. They all resonated like never before in the characteristic voice of the flamenco singer within the walls of the Teatro Santo Tomás. A concert in which Mercé’s ability to fuse the most recognizable elements of flamenco art with more modern influences was clear.
José Mercé came out on stage with Moraíto Chico, his guitarist, creating an intimate atmosphere with the Ávila audience, with whom he talked between songs. In one of those intermissions, the Jerez native made a fierce defense of flamenco. «Flamenco is our musical genre, it is a Spain brand. “Let no one forget,” he stated to the applause of the audience.
