José Mendes, president of Sp. Covilhã, passed away at the age of 65. The leader was admitted to Hospital da Covilhã and ended up failing to survive a prolonged illness. It should be remembered that José Mendes presided over the mountain emblem for 19 years and had two division promotions on his CV and 15 consecutive seasons in the 2nd league, in addition to the many improvements he made over the years at the Santos Pinto Municipal Stadium, missing just complete a side bench. Unfulfilled, he left the desire to transform the club’s current SDUQ into a SAD, which despite already having approval from the members, there was no investor.
Through social media, Sp. Covilhã said goodbye to “Homem do Leme”. “If he was proud of what he achieved and did at Sporting Clube da Covilhã, it was an honor for us to have been at his side all these years”, the publication reads. Liga Portugal, of which he was director, and the FPF said goodbye to an “unavoidable and remarkable figure”, declaring a minute of silence at this weekend’s games.
However, the club also informed that the game with Amora, initially scheduled for tomorrow at 3 pm, was postponed with a date yet to be defined.
To the bereaved family, Record offers heartfelt condolences.
