The Minister of Culture, Alpidio Alonso, presented this Sunday the 2021 National Music Award to the outstanding composer and pianist, José María Vitier, during the tribute concert offered by the National Symphony Orchestra.
The director of the National Choir of Cuba, Digna Guerra, read the minutes of the jury that was chaired and made up of other consecrated conductors such as Guido López-Gavilán, Joaquín Betancourt and Edesio Alejandro; all masters of musical creation, who already hold such a high distinction on the island.
In his words, Guerra stressed that the maestro Vitier “is the owner of one of the vastly immense and most solid works of the composers of our generation” and, in turn, classified it as “the right bridge between popular and concert music. »
Faced with emotion, Vitier confessed to being honored and said that “it is a blessing to have been born a musician in the country of music. To remain, to resist and to arrive dreaming at this third age, which is like a third bank of the river of the imagination. “
He also thanked the teachers who educated his inspiration as well as his disciples in more than six decades of work still without a visible end because, in his opinion, “learning to learn is the greatest teaching in art.”
As a prize for the ensemble of a life and work dedicated to music, the National Symphony Orchestra gave the maestro Vitier a tribute recital that included nine of his emblematic compositions.
The flutist Niurka González gave a luxurious opening together with the pianist Marcos Madrigal with the interpretation of two sublime pieces in the repertoire of maestro Vitier: Intimidad and Ballad of adolescent love.
Both instrumentalists accompanied the OSN in the successful purpose of entertaining the 68-year-old creator, whose production has been the soundtrack of audiovisuals such as In Silence Has Had to Be and Julito the Fisherman, in collaboration with his brother Sergio (1948-2016), Also 2014 National Music Award.
Other elegant versions of El Siglo de las Luces (1992) and Fresa y Chocolate (1993) recalled his imprint on Cuban cinema of all time; while their Havana Concert -written for symphonic format (expanded) – offered with a praised execution of the movements Pórtico and Vitral.
Madrigal endorsed the End of the Century Dance supported by the symphonic formation under the baton of maestro Enrique Pérez Mesa, who previously delighted the audience in the Covarrubias room of the National Theater.
For the closing, the Festive Contradanza and it was the quintessence in the selection of the repertoire at the hands of Vitier himself, who invited Madrigal disciple, soprano Barbara Llanes, Abel Acosta on percussion; all united in a Hail Mary for Cuba.
