José Gabriel Ortiz has been the presenter of ‘Yo José Gabriel’ since 1998 (Screenshot/YouTube)
Since Yo, José Gabriel was broadcast for the first time in 1998, the presenter José Gabriel Ortiz became one of the faces with which the Colombian public identifies Canal RCN, to such an extent that the Bogotá native began his journey in the media when the chain was taking its first steps as a private channel.

Although it was not the first cycle of interviews in the history of national television, it was one of the first to adopt the model of American talk shows, in the style of figures such as David Letterman or Jay Leno. That earned him equal praise and criticism at the time and until today, but it was enough to become a remembered face to this day.
During the first stage of broadcasts that ran from 1998 to 2007, Yo, José Gabriel aired on Friday nights. During the next four years he participated in other programs on Canal 1 and Caracol Televisión with moderate success, until in 2011 he was appointed by Juan Manuel Santos to be Colombia’s ambassador to Mexico.

After finishing his term as a diplomat in 2019, the Bogota resident remained in the Aztec country with his family, but he also agreed with RCN to return Yo, José Gabriel that same year. To do this, as he explained in an interview at that time with El Tiempo, he would travel to Colombia twice a month to record the program. This dynamic has been maintained to date, with the difference that now the cycle is broadcast on Sunday nights.
Recently, the man from Bogotá spoke of his surprising presence in the media, since he came to television without having a background in presenting programs and also managed to consolidate himself. In an interview for Lo Sé Todo, José Gabriel told those who did not know that he has been “the 25-year-old asshole (in the middle). I went on the air on September 19, 1998.”

He also emphasized the fact that, despite having been in the media for a quarter of a century and doing the job of constantly finding out about national news, he is not a professional journalist. Demonstrating his sense of humor, he said:
“I have enjoyed it a lot, but I am not a television man, I am not a journalist, I am an industrial engineer and I ended up doing what I did not study”
On a personal level, José Gabriel Ortiz made it very clear that family was his main priority, even though he considered himself a very relaxed person. Especially when it comes to his grandchildren:
“I am a dad and a grandfather. I have three children, one from a first marriage (with Maria Elvira Samper) and two from the second marriage (Diana Van Meerbeke). I have 3 grandchildren and, obviously, I am spoiled, rude. I rude them and the idea is to rude them”
The presenter deepened his facet as a grandfather and in that position of being more open to his grandchildren doing what they want every time they visit him at his house located in the Chapinero sector, in Bogotá. This, as José Gabriel himself emphasized, is in contrast to the more vigilant attitude that parents tend to have because they are responsible for his education:
“The problem of education belongs to the parents, mine is to rude them, please them and let them do whatever the hell they want in my house and wherever they want”
During the talk with the Channel 1 entertainment program, José Gabriel referred to the possibility of ending his stage on television, and explained that this is not an option he is considering for now, because he enjoys what he does and there are still characters to interview:
“As long as they hold me on the channel and there are characters [para entrevistar], there will be a moment when the program will be finished. At the moment I don’t think so and I hope they don’t really want to finish the program.”
