Jos Verstappen and Max Verstappen are like two hands on one stomach. The duo were inseparable when the younger of the two set out on the road to Formula 1. Father Jos did everything he could to get his son to the royal class and eventually succeeded.
Then it was difficult to let go of the now ten-time Grand Prix winner when he grew up. As soon as a small piece of the documentary is shown, Verstappen senior immediately fills up again. He doesn’t go to races as often as he used to and his son is completely independent.
“That is difficult. You have to let go of Max at some point. It is also a bit of my sport, at least, I did everything for it. Then he turns eighteen and the day after he leaves for Monaco”, he says. the fact that Verstappen then moved to the principality and started living on his own.
“Then you ran your legs out from under your ass for twelve years and then suddenly he is gone. Then you actually lose a part of yourself, I really had trouble with that. That just touches you”, he says emotionally. Last weekend he was again at home looking at his son with excitement.
“Then I am looking in the same way again. Qualifying was incredibly exciting and you hope that he makes a good start, because that is not the strength of the Red Bull. And then you see that first moment, there. I pay a lot of attention to whether he gets away without wheelspin. Then that looks good and you are a lot more relaxed. “
Still, he got another little heart attack when Max said something about the tapes on the radio. “Then I immediately get flashbacks to Imola. That just remains exciting,” said Verstappen.
