GRANADA/MRIDA, 18 (PRESS EUROPE)

The Archbishop of Granada, Javier Martínez, turns 75 next Tuesday, the day on which, according to the procedure foreseen for bishops, he will prepare the letter to the Holy Father with his resignation on grounds of age, sources from the Archbishopric told the European press . In this way a process will be activated in which Monsignor Martínez will become archbishop emeritus, while his curate, José María Gil Tamayo of Extremadura, will take care of the archdiocese.

In any case, this letter of resignation does not mean that the archbishop should leave his post ‘ipso facto’ since we have to wait for the decision taken by Pope Francis on the matter.

In mid-July, the Holy Father appointed Msgr. José María Gil Tamayo Coadjutor Archbishop of Granada. Born in Zalamea de la Serena (Badajoz) on June 5, 1957, he was then Bishop of Vila.

According to the Code of Canon Law, the curate immediately becomes bishop of the diocese to which he has been appointed when it becomes vacant.

Gil Tamayo was ordained a priest on 7 September 1980 and belongs to the clergy of the archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz. He holds a degree in Ecclesiastical Studies from the Faculty of Theology of the University of Navarra and in Information Sciences from the same University of Navarra.

He developed his pastoral work for nine years in the cities of the Archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz and in 1992 he assumed the direction of the Delegation of Media and the Information Office of his diocese and was appointed Canon of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Badajoz.
