José Díaz: A Story of Dignity and Choice
On a somber Monday, José Díaz, a 33-year-old man from Huelva, passed away after choosing to end his life through euthanasia. Three years ago, José suffered from cerebral necrosis, which left him with irreversible consequences such as loss of vision, speech, and almost all mobility. Despite the sorrow felt by his family, they expressed satisfaction in honoring José’s wish to die with dignity.
A Brave Decision
José’s journey towards this decision began a year and a half ago when he realized that his condition would not improve. The Commission for Guarantee and Evaluation for End-of-Life Assistance approved his request for euthanasia on February 22nd, allowing José and his family to set a date for the procedure on April 1st.
Overcoming Obstacles
Despite facing challenges, including medical professionals’ conscientious objections, José remained steadfast in his desire to end his suffering. His condition stemmed from a methanol poisoning incident in 2021, which resulted in irreversible brain damage after months in the Intensive Care Unit of the Juan Ramón Jiménez Hospital.
