Jorge Tizol, journalist from Retalteco, is detained during coverage of the raid

Jorge Tizol, a renowned journalist from Retalhuleu, was arrested this Saturday morning, after covering a raid carried out by prosecutors from the Public Ministry and the National Civil Police, for an investigation into cattle theft.

Tizol who works for a cable channel and broadcasts on his page Note Retalteco, broadcast the actions of the prosecutors during the raid for a few minutes, but then the image cuts off and the broadcast ends. Shortly afterwards, different communicators published that they had detained him on orders of the prosecutor in charge of the operation.

According to statements from the social communicator, when they found out about the raid they moved to the place, which was a farm where they were investigating the theft of livestock.

“I am accused of invading private property, but the street where the news was being broadcast is a community right-of-way. However, the MP prosecutor in charge told me that I was on private property. She also told me that she was not going to turn a blind eye and that journalists are very abusive and she ordered my arrest, without any cause. , because it is a step of the community”the journalist narrated.

Tizol requests transfer to the hospital

The communicator added that after the arrest action, he felt in poor health and requested to be transferred to the Retalhuleu Hospital, however, he was being guarded by an agent of the National Civil Police.

Several Retalhuleu journalists arrived to support the comrade, who pointed out that press freedom is being violated, since the place where the raid was carried out supposedly belongs to the son of a former councilor of the Retalhuleu commune.

According to journalists, the prosecutor in charge of the raid and ordering Tizol’s arrest is the Assistant Prosecutor of the Public Ministry, Surama Raquel Barillas Godoy, from the Santa Cruz Mulua prosecutor’s office.
