Jorge Rivero, guest conductor of the Orchestra, dies

This morning, music in Jalisco dresses in mourning with the sudden death of Jorge Rivero, guest director of the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra.

Rivero, a 74-year-old Cuban oboist, suffered a heart attack while rehearsing inside of Throat cut theatrejust before the next concert in the Spring Serenades cycle, where he would play a central role as director.

The talented musician was preparing the concert scheduled for next Sunday in the courtyard of the Cultural Cabañas, where he would direct the interpretation of the famous “Four Seasons” by Vivaldi, among other works.

Jorge Riverorecognized for his musical prowess and dedication to the Philharmonic Orchestra, was scheduled to conduct as guest conductor throughout the month of April, as well as on a tour of several municipalities and in a special concert of the Spring Season in the Cabins.

The fatal outcome occurred when the musician was rehearsing at the Degollado Theater, where he suffered a sudden heart attack.

This tragic event evokes the memory of another similar episode that occurred in March 2003, when the then director of the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra, Luis Herrera de la Fuente, also faced a heart condition while conducting a Sunday concert at the Throat cut theatre. Fortunately, Herrera de la Fuente emerged from that experience unscathed.

He received a solid academic training in National School of Art (ENA) of Havana, with professors Todor Stalev, Georgui Zhelianov and Lido Guarnieri. He later carried out further studies in Paris with Claude Maisonneuve.

Throughout his artistic career he obtained various recognitions, among which the First Prize for Oboe in the National Music Competition of Havana, the Excellence Prize awarded by the Rueil Malmaison Paris Conservatory and Virtuoso Prize as the best album in the Concert Music category.

He was rated as one of the best performers of oboe in the world.
