The City of Santa Tecla has unrivaled architectural beauties in its squares, monuments and sumptuous residences that still surround its historic center, which have nothing to envy of other heritage sites inside and outside the country. Unfortunately, these legendary assets are victims of excessive voracity of unscrupulous and uneducated people, who take on the task of destroying the little historical heritage that exists in the city, after the earthquake of January 13, 2001.

Recently one of these properties was demolished by the new owners, with the science and patience of the municipality and Ministry of Culture, as is the old house of Don Jorge Guirola Búcaro (+), and his wife Josefina Yúdice de Guirola (+), Built in 1854 during the founding of the city, which in the opinion of historians is representative of French architecture, as it was designed, for which wood and die-cut sheets were imported from France at the end of the 19th century.

Jorge Guirola Búcaro was a prosperous farmer; since Santa Tecla was characterized by its plantations of coffee, corn, vegetables among other crops, its excellent climate and abundance of aquifers. Don Jorge was the son of Don Eustaquio Guirola de la Cotera (+), and Doña Elena Búcaro de Guirola (+), originally from Zacatecoluca, department of La Paz, regarding Guirola Búcaro’s descent, nothing is known about it. The residence in question is located on 2nd Avenue North a few meters from the old Tecleña mayor’s office, over time it belonged to Dr. Joaquín Peralta (+), and in his last years to the family of the remembered pharmaceutical chemist Gabriel Serrano (+ ).

It is important to point out in light of this attack on the city’s historical heritage, that Santa Tecla was a hacienda belonging to the San Jacinto parish; that in 1786 became part of the San Salvador Party; which, as a result of the earthquake of 1854, the decision was made to move the capital to a new territory, so the Santa Tecla plain was chosen for its excellent scenery, especially in terms of obtaining water.

That on August 8, 1854, the City of Nueva San Salvador was founded, so, months later, inaugural ceremonies were held between December 24 and 26 of that year, in which it was granted the status of capital of El Salvador. .

It is worth mentioning that with the arrival of the 20th century, the construction and improvement of communication routes came to Santa Tecla (1903); introduction of electric power (1906-1907); the first tram (1920); the drinking water service in (1927); that in 2004 the city was returned to its original name by legislative decree.

Therefore, we Tecleños must be strong defenders of our historical and cultural heritage, before we must regret the destruction of our history.
