Jorge Glas was transferred to the Military Hospital for an alleged drug overdose – Diario La Página – 2024-04-12 05:38:42

The former vice president of Ecuador Jorge Glas would have been transferred from the prison where he is held to a hospital, after having ingested excessive medications, Ecuadorian media report.

According to Primicias, which cites a police report to which it had access, “the diagnosis of self-induced deep coma caused by the ingestion of anxiolytic, antidepressant and sedative medications is presumed.”

The former official would have been taken from the La Roca maximum security prison, located in Guayaquil, in the province of Guayas, to the Military Hospital in that city.

«It was what I feared. The scoundrels will jump for joy. “Strength, Jorge!”, former president Rafael Correa reacted to the news.

Glas was detained in La Roca last Saturday, after having been detained when the Ecuadorian public forces broke into the Mexican embassy in Quito – on Friday night – where he had taken refuge since December of last year.

A few hours before the invasion of the diplomatic headquarters, Mexico reported that, after an exhaustive analysis, it decided to grant political asylum to Glas, a 54-year-old politician who was vice president of Ecuador between May 2013 and January 2018 —during the presidencies. of Correa and Lenín Moreno.

That decision was confirmed one day after the Government of Daniel Noboa declared the Mexican ambassador, Raquel Serur Smeke, persona non grata, and gave her a period of 72 hours to leave the country.

After the assault on the embassy, which Quito justified by alleging that there was a real risk of Glas’ imminent escape, Mexico broke diplomatic relations with Ecuador.
