Do you know the movie “The Seventh String”? In this French strip by Alain Corneau from 1991, Gérard Depardieu – wearing a beauty mark and an allonge wig – takes up the viol and coaxes the most beautiful tones out of the instrument. The ghost player who plays the viola da gamba instead of the movie star is Jordi Savall. The gambist, conductor and ensemble leader is considered to be one of the most renowned musicians in the genre of so-called “early music” and wherever the Catalan appears, the concert halls are full.
On August 1st of this year the. Jordi Savall, born in Igualada, celebrated his 80th birthday. Trained in Barcelona and Switzerland, his interpretations of early music as well as his work as a lecturer and researcher made him one of the most important artists on the scene. In 1987 Jordi Savall founded his Capella, with which he has since realized one historical project after another. It is not always the traditional compositions of more or less well-known musicians – he is interested in the cultural conditions under which the music was created.
For years you can’t be sure where your creative urge will lead you. His oeuvre has so far comprised around 200 publications, which also includes research into the classical music of Armenia, Turkey, Celtic traditions, but also new interpretations of well-known baroque music such as Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerts”.
During his childhood in Spain, Jordi Savall lived through the Franco dictatorship, an experience that shapes him to this day. The humanist Jordi Savall travels the world as a Unesco peace ambassador and plays in the “Orpheus XXI” ensemble he founded with refugees from Afghanistan and Syria.
