Jordan’s foreign minister said on Thursday that his country fears that the worst of the war between Israel and Hamas is yet to come and there are no signs of success in efforts to reduce tensions, Reuters reported, citing BTA.
At a press conference with her German counterpart Ayman Safadi said that war would have “catastrophic consequences” and called for “protection of the region from the danger of its expansion”.
“All signs indicate that the worst is yet to come. The disaster will have painful consequences in the coming periods,” Safadi said, adding that diplomatic efforts to end the conflict are not yielding results.
“The decision to end the war is not in our power, but in Israel, and we must make every effort to end it,” Safadi said.
In Amman, Safadi said the kingdom would oppose “with all its means” a mass displacement of Palestinians that would lead to major changes in the region.
“We will not accept such a decision. This is a red line and will be a declaration of war,” added the minister.
The conflict has raised long-standing fears in Jordan, home to large numbers of Palestinian refugees and their descendants, that a widening crisis would give Israel the chance to implement a policy of transferring Palestinians from the West Bank.
“We will not allow Israel to export the crisis it created to Jordan,” Safadi said.
