Prince Hamzah is the son of the former King Hussein and his fourth wife, Queen Noor. The current King Abdullah is his half-brother; the two have the same father. Abdullah succeeded his father Hussein in 1999. Hamzah became crown prince because Hussein wanted him to eventually succeed Abdullah. But Abdullah reversed that decision in 2004, saying he wanted to free Hamzah from the restrictions that would entail a position as crown prince. Later, Abdullah’s own son became crown prince.
