Jordan: – The queen rages: – Malicious

On Saturday night, there were reports that the Jordanian prince Hamzah (41) had allegedly been placed under house arrest. He is the half-brother of Jordan’s King Abdullah II (59), who has ruled since his father King Hussein’s death in 1999.

The political situation in Jordan is now unclear.

In a video sent to BBC from the prince’s lawyer, prince Hamzah has accused the country’s leaders of corruption, incompetence and harassment, at the same time as he claimed that he is under house arrest, writes NTB.

Now Prince Hamzah’s mother, Queen Noor (69), is breaking the silence following the events of the last 24 hours in Jordan. She criticizes what she calls “malicious backbiting”.

– I pray that truth and justice will apply to all the innocent victims of this evil backbiting, the queen writes on Twitter.

In the video the BBC published, the prince claims that he was visited by the authorities on Saturday, and that he is said to have been refused to leave the house, as well as talk to other people.

14 arrested

Prince Hamzah is the son of the late King Hussein and his American wife, Queen Noor, while King Abdullah is the son of one of his former wives, Muna Al-Hussein.

Hamzah was previously the country’s crown prince, but the king chose in 2004 to deprive him of this title, according to NTB.

Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi claimed at a news conference on Sunday that Prince Hamzah had planned to destabilize the country by collaborating with foreign parties in a “malicious conspiracy”, according to Sky News.

At least 14 people have been arrested in the country for criticizing the royal power.

Safadi also claims that a foreign intelligence agency has been in contact with Prince Hamzah’s wife to try to get them out of the country by plane.

– Very unusual

According to NTB, the army in the country has said that Hamzah has been asked to “stop some activities” that could threaten the security and stability of the country. On Saturday, there were some reports that it was a coup attempt.

It is very unusual for members of the inner circle of the royal family in Jordan to criticize the way the country is governed.

– This is something the king does not accept or tolerate. This is why we see what has happened. This case is now more or less closed, says the Jordanian analyst Labib Kamhawi to AFP, according to NTB.
