Jordan Mechner believes that releasing a realistic game right after Assassin’s Creed Mirage would be a mistake.

Designer and programmer of Karateka and the original 1989 Prince of Persia, also involved in the creation of The Sands of Time, talked with TheGamer about how he feels about the “return” of the series.
Mechner noted that in the 13 years since the last new Prince game, The Forgotten Sands, Ubisoft has repeatedly tried to restart the franchise. None of the projects ever made it to release, and the creator of the series was also involved in some of them. True, he had nothing to do with the development of The Lost Crown, but I am very glad that the game was entrusted to a particularly talented team from the studio in Montpellier.
He says he’s pleased that the company has settled on a 2D game, as he thinks a major AAA Prince of Persia game would be hard to get attention, primarily because of the huge success of the Assassin’s Creed series.
So much time has passed, as many as 13 years. So I’m excited that a new Prince of Persia is finally coming out. And from such a great team that was clearly given enough time and resources to make the game deep, balanced and fun.
And 2D is very suitable for the series right now for a number of reasons, and one of them, obviously, is Assassin’s Creed. One has only to look at the Mirage, which was shown at the same presentation. It literally takes place in Persia, and a second AAA game with a realistic style close to Assassin’s Creed could not coexist next to it.
Fans who prefer a more realistic Prince of Persia style should understand that The Lost Crown is not the time or place for this.

Although Mechner disagreed with the negative player reaction to the first trailers for the upcoming Prince of Persia, he noted that it only proves that the series is still very popular. Therefore, his situation is rather pleasing.
It seems to me that the fact that the first reactions of the fans turned out to be so opposite to each other – some were happy, while others were indignant at something – in a strange way proves that the franchise is alive.
The wave of negativity seems so huge precisely because of how many Prince of Persia fans are and how different they are. That first trailer unleashed an energy that had been building up for 13 years as people waited and wondered what the new Prince could be.
When it comes to Prince of Persia fans, it means tens of millions of people of different ages, different genders, with different backgrounds, speaking different languages. Well, they can’t all agree with each other. No new Prince of Persia could immediately meet all the expectations and hopes of every fan.
I’m glad the fans are so passionate about this series. And it makes me even happier when they remain polite to each other.

In addition, Mechner noted that the change of protagonist is not something new for the franchise, and each of the characters only “embodies a certain role or idea about “Prince of Persia””. He has no doubt that Sargon, the protagonist of The Lost Crown, can be loved by players – especially if the game itself turns out to be really good.
The game designer was also asked if he knew anything about the remake of The Sands of Time – after all, he provided the Indian Ubisoft team with original design documents that he worked on for the original released in 2003. However, he didn’t have much to say.
I don’t know how much of the previous team’s work will be used in Ubisoft Montreal. I know that they have a lot of experience in making AAA games and that they have been given the resources to reach a much higher bar than the Indian team.
I think that this will be a completely different remake of Sands of Time, unlike the one that was so close to release in 2020. I hope that it will live up to the expectations of fans of the game.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, announced at Summer Game Fest 2023, is set to release on PC and consoles on January 18th. The Sands of Time remake, on the other hand, still doesn’t even have a rough release window. As Ubisoft said in May, after restarting development, it is in the early stages of production.

The game from the authors of Rayman Legends will also have a full-fledged combat system – with super attacks, parries and modifiers.
