Jordan Henderson’s Departure and Klopp’s Decision: Liverpool’s Captaincy Dilemma for the 2023/24 Season

Jordan Henderson left Liverpool this week, and the captain’s theme was frequently brought up in the run-up to the Leicester game on Sunday.

The club is currently without an official captain and Jürgen Klopp has an important decision to make before the start of the season.

The German confirms that Virgil Van Dijk will take charge in today’s match.

– Virgil starts the match tomorrow and he wants to be captain. “I know what my decision will be (permanent), but I have to tell the players before I talk about it here,” said the Liverpool manager.

The 32-year-old centre-back was also selected as captain for both games in Germany, but according to Klopp that has no impact on his permanent selection.

– In the run-up, we have made it easy. Virg was number three last year, and therefore he has that responsibility now. In the second half, it’s about who has been at the club the longest, and it’s Joe Gomez, Klopp continued.

A very important choice

There is probably a special atmosphere in the team this summer. Vice-captain Milner and captain Henderson have left the club, and the dressing room has lost two of its main pillars.

Klopp knows that the captain’s choice will be very important towards the 2023/24 season.

– It is an important decision, and the elections in the general management group are even more important. It’s a big change for us, because important players have left us, but that’s how it is, he said.

During the last couple of weeks, the German has experienced a Liverpool squad without Hendo. Klopp has been impressed with his squad, at a special time.

– Things must change, and you cannot avoid changing or developing. I can see many positive signs in training, and in battle. The boys understand the situation, and I’m very happy about that, concluded the German.

Liverpool meet Leicester at Singapore’s National Arena at 11.00 Sunday. The match is broadcast on LFC TV, VG+ and V Sport PL.
