Joran van der Sloot is temporarily extradited from Peru to the United States. The Dutchman has been serving a 28-year prison sentence in Peru since 2011 and is the main suspect in the disappearance of the American Natalee Holloway in 2005. Now the US wants to prosecute him for extortion and fraudulent acts after Holloway’s mother filed a report at the time.
The 35-year-old Dutchman is said to have accepted $ 25,000 in cash from the Holloway family in 2010, just before he went to Peru. In return, he would lead them to Natalee’s body. He allegedly committed fraud with the money.
Holloway disappeared in 2005 during a school trip to Aruba. She was last seen leaving a bar with Van der Sloot. Her body was never found and the Dutchman was not prosecuted. A judge later pronounced Holloway dead. She would have been 36 years old now.
Van der Sloot is serving a 28-year prison sentence in Peru for the murder of Peruvian Stephany Flores in 2010. The Peruvian government has agreed to temporarily extradite the Dutch citizen to US authorities. “There he is being prosecuted for allegedly committing the crimes of extortion and fraud,” Peru’s Justice Minister Daniel Maurate Romero said.
A 2001 treaty between Peru and the US allows a suspect to be temporarily extradited to face trial in the other country. It requires the prisoner to be “returned” after the judicial process is completed.
Natalee’s mother, Beth, issued a statement from Peru after the news. In it she says that there will be “justice at last” for Natalee’s disappearance.
