Joran van der Sloot is temporarily extradited by Peru to the United States. The Dutchman is serving a 28-year prison sentence in the South American country and is the main suspect in the disappearance of the American Natalee Holloway in 2005.
Now the US wants to prosecute him for extortion and fraudulent acts after a report from Holloway’s mother.
In 2010, just before he went to Peru, the 35-year-old Dutchman would have accepted $ 25,000 (converted to about 19,800 euros) in cash from the Holloway family. In return, he would lead them to Natalee’s body. He allegedly committed fraud with the money.
Holloway disappeared in 2005 during a school trip to Aruba. She was last seen leaving a bar with Van der Sloot. Her body was never found and the Dutchman was not prosecuted. A judge later pronounced Holloway dead. She would have been 36 years old now.
Van der Sloot is serving a 28-year prison sentence in Peru for the murder of Peruvian Stephany Flores in 2010.
Mother Natalee Holloway: ‘Finally justice’
The Peruvian government has agreed to temporarily extradite the Dutchman to the US authorities. “There he is being prosecuted for extortion and fraud,” said Peruvian Justice Minister Daniel Maurate Romero.
A 2001 treaty between Peru and the US allows a suspect to be temporarily extradited to be tried in the other country. The prisoner is ‘returned’ as soon as the judicial process is completed.
It is unclear when exactly Van der Sloot will be extradited. A spokesman for the Holloway family has against the American news channel CNN said that the Dutchman is not yet in the US, but that the trial will probably start on Thursday.
Holloway’s mother Beth said in response to the news from Peru that “justice is finally coming”.
