Joost Klein’s Eurovision Song Contest entry European Pope has already been streamed 1.2 million times in the Netherlands via Spotify within one day. The artist may have set a new record with this.
The song was presented on Thursday around 5 p.m. and had already been streamed more than half a million times by the evening. It rarely happens that a song scores more than half a million streams in one day in the Netherlands.
The record number of Spotify streams within one day is in the name of Duncan Laurence. The day after his victory at the Eurovision Song Contest in May 2019, his song Arcade streamed more than a million times. The agency that represents Spotify in the Netherlands says that it can only be said after the weekend whether European Pope actually set a new record.
Joost is not only successful in the Netherlands: with more than 1.6 million streams within one day, his song is in 104th place on the global ranking of the most streamed songs. The song is also very popular in Belgium and Austria.
Also the outro of European Pope is often found. The last, quiet part of the song has been released on Spotify and is in second place in the Netherlands with 337,000 streams. The song is also popular on YouTube: the video clip has already been viewed almost four million times at the time of writing. European Pope already has more views than most other entries on the Eurovision Song Contest account.
This year’s Eurovision Song Contest will take place from May 7 to 11 in Malmö, Sweden. Joost will represent the Netherlands in the second semi-final on May 9.
