The historic afternoon in the Baltic Women’s Volleyball League ended with the triumph of Kaunas “Kauno-VDU” team. In the final four tournament held in Tallinn (Estonia) on Sunday, the Kaunian team defeated “Aušrinė” of Jonava and defended the trophy won last year.
For the first time in history, two Lithuanian teams played in the final of the Baltic League. “Kaunas-VDU” fought against the winner of the regular season “Aušrina” of Jonava. Dominating the court from the second set, Kaunas won 3-1 (22:25, 25:16, 25:13, 25:15).
“Aušrinės” volleyball players, who won bronze medals in this tournament a year ago, started the match actively and after a successful section, took the lead at the end of the first set.
In the second set, the “Kauno-VDU” team took the initiative. Later, “Aušrinei” began to run out of strength, and the Kaunas club made fewer and fewer mistakes both in attack and defense. In the fourth set, “Aušrinė” still tried to maintain intrigue, but in the end, “Kaunas-VDU” broke away again and won.
Martyna Paukštytė scored 21 points for the winners, Viltė Bogdanović 19, Gabija Kasperavičiūtė 13, Gvanca Ulumbelašvili 12, Karolina Pravdinskaitė 7, Kotryna Motiejūnaitė 6.
Daniele Kvedaraitė scored 15 points in the Jonava team, Jekaterina Kovalskaja 13, Iryna Yakutavičienė 6, Akvilė Sebežiova 5.
“Kauno-VDU” player Martyna Paukštytė was recognized as the most useful player of the final four.
As many as five Lithuanian volleyball players entered the symbolic top six players – Viltė Bogdanovič (Kaunas-VDU), Gabija Kasperavičiūtė (Kaunas-VDU), Karolina Pravdinskaitė (Kaunas-VDU), Jekaterina Kovalskaja (Aušrinė) and Danielė Kvedaraitė (“Dawn”).
The third place in the tournament was taken by the Riga RVS-LU (Latvia) team, which beat the Tallinn “TalTech-Tradehouse” club (Estonia) 3-2 in the small final.
