Jonathan Viera: Hopes for Last Derby and Promotion to First Division

Jonathan Viera against Cartagena (LALIGA)

Deporpress Editorial | Jonathan Viera: “I hope it’s my last derby.” The captain of UD Las Palmas confessed this Thursday, before the Heliodoro derby against CD Tenerife, that he hopes it will be his last match of the maximum regional rivalry “because we go up to the First Division and they don’t.”

Jonathan Viera asks that in the final stretch of the season, no matter what happens in the derby, “we all have to remain united” and that “no one gets off the boat.” The captain of UD Las Palmas feels optimistic about the end of the season, both collectively and personally: “I feel very good, in the best moment of the season. I have had problems during the year. “I am in the best conditions where we will be risking everything.”

Viera was a spokesperson for the squad this Thursday, in the week that ends in the derby against CD Tenerife. He asks that Las Palmas not change his style in the match one centimeter: “It has to be us. We must be calmer than ever. I know it’s a derby and we have a lot at stake. But what has brought us here is being us. Anything that means getting out of here will not lead us to anything good,” he said.

They reminded the Gran Canarian player of his famous phrase “I see a lot of partying here”, from the last epilogue of the championship. “I clarified it after the play off. They took my words as disrespect, but that was not the case. I tried to encourage my people, so that the (second leg) match would be a pressure cooker. The atmosphere doesn’t worry me, just the field, playing well and winning.”

A derby does not change the way we approach it: “We prepare for the game the same as other weeks. We don’t change anything, because we blindly believe in what we do. If we make those changes we will be wrong,” he commented before expressing his surprise at the situation so far away from the blue and white: “Tenerife’s situation surprises me, because they have a better team than what the table reflects. Every year is different and I didn’t expect them to be there at this point.”

He put himself in the shoes of Saturday’s rival: “We know that they want to bring joy to their fans. But if there is a team that plays more, it is us. We knew that the others were going to push, because they are good teams. It is a great merit to be at the top all year round. But we have to be together, all in the same boat. If we leave there we will lose what we have achieved.”

“I do not know the truth. I don’t know if it will be my last derby. My thought is no. I hope it is the last derby because we go up to First Division and they don’t. I am 33 years old and I have years left on my contract. “I am happy here, tomorrow I don’t know what will happen,” she expressed out loud.

When referring to the games in which Las Palmas was not able to take advantage of its numerical superiority, Viera reflected as follows: “That we are having a hard time playing against ten is a fact. We are losing points due to the haste of not understanding that the game lasts 90 minutes and we have to mature our rivals, make them wear themselves out. We have learned. The next game that looks like this, I hope the team is more mature on the field.”

“If the table were upside down, the message would be to win the game no matter what, to give joy to the fans. They are in a situation that is not desired for them. They are going to strive to win Saturday’s game to give that joy to their team,” he said later when referring to the hypothesis of a qualifying turnaround.

He insisted that “the pressure exists and will be there. We have to learn from last year. The team is more mature and we are managing it well. The others are also competitive. Whoever thought that in March we were promoted and superfluous, he doesn’t know what this is about. I sign to play the last game and go up. It may be that we fail, that someone else takes it from us, no.”
