Jonathan Huberdeau was blamed for the Flames loss

Last night, the Calgary Flames hosted the Los Angeles Kings. The game started well for Jonathan Huberdeau as he scored a goal to give his side a 1-0 lead.

Only this fine play by the Quebec forward was marred by a late-game error that cost his team the game. In overtime, the former Panthers had a golden opportunity, but committed a costly turnover that allowed the Kings to recover the puck and score the game-winning goal on a fast break.

Looking back, Huberdeau clearly should have hit the streak and everyone let him know after the fight.

Eric Francis, the Flames’ Sportsnet reporter, said the striker’s refusal to shoot was hurting his progress and costing the Flames dearly.

On Twitter, actor Mark Ghanimé made a joke representing the feelings of many people in Calgary.

Darryl Sutter, the team’s coach, didn’t mince words about Huberdeau, pointing out that the opposing team’s leading scorer would surely shoot the puck.

The concerned principal himself reacted to the situation. He admitted that he should have fired.

Unfortunately for the Quebecer, this isn’t the first time he’s been criticized since his arrival in Calgary. In recent weeks, many have noted that he doesn’t shoot enough for the opposing net, when he has done it just 51 times in 30 games this season, which ranks him 264th in the NHL.

Last year he finished 45th in shooting.

And we recall that in early November Sutter had also criticized him in front of the media.

After scoring 115 points last year, he has just 23 in 30 games this season. His adjustment to his new team is certainly not going as planned, but with a contract that will earn him $10.5 million a year through 2031, let’s hope he’s back up and running sooner rather than later.
