Jonathan Dos Santos announces his retirement from the Mexican national team

Mexico City. Mexican midfielder Jonathan Dos Santos announced on Thursday his retirement from the national team to focus completely on his club América and give younger players a chance.

The 33-year-old footballer debuted with the national team in 2009, and participated in the 2018 World Cup held in Russia. With the Mexican representative he appeared in 58 games and scored five goals.

“My priority right now is América, I give priority to América here until I retire. It is true that the national team has given me a lot, but at this moment in my career I am no longer a young man and I feel that right now I I have to give everything to America,” Dos Santos told reporters.

Dos Santos arrived in 2022 at the Águilas del América, where he was champion of the 2023 Apertura tournament.

“I feel that right now it is no longer my time to be in the national team, I am 100 percent focused on America, it is my priority. I am happy with my decision because I know that the national team has given me a lot, there are very talented young people, incredible players and a spectacular coach, they are in a process and in the following years they are going to do very well,” he added.

Dos Santos’ last game with Mexico was in September 2021 in a 1-1 draw against El Salvador in the Concacaf qualifier for the 2022 World Cup.

Dos Santos debuted for Barcelona in Spain in 2009 after training in the minor divisions of the Barça team. In 2014 he moved to Villarreal and three years later he arrived in the MLS to play with the LA Galaxy.
