Lille reached deep into the money pouch last summer to lure Jonathan David away from AA Gent. The French put about 27 million euros on the table for the Canadian attacker.
But in France David has not yet been able to live up to the high expectations. After 10 matches in the shirt of Lille, his counter is still at zero goals. Against Celtic, he failed to score even from the spot.
The French sports newspaper L’Equipe was positive about Lille, which after a 0-2 deficit, still dragged a 2-2 draw from the fire, but is concerned about David. “Chances are that his courage has completely sunk in his shoes”, it sounds.
“Although he was more involved in the game and also triggered the penalty himself, he kicked the ball badly and again failed to open his account. It’s getting alarming”, says L’Equipe.
Coach Christophe Galtier was mild for the former Gent player. “Sooner or later he will score”, Galtier is convinced. “Jonathan was the first to take a penalty. So I don’t blame him for taking it. The pressure on him is indeed increasing, but we will help him.”
