Jonathan Christie failed to defend his title in Indonesia Masters 2024. Jonathan was eliminated in the first round after a tight three-game duel against Lu Guang Zu.
Jonatan faced Lu in the round of 32 of the Indonesia Masters 2024. Competing at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday (24/1/2024) afternoon WIB, Jonatan lost 21-19, 19-21, 19-21 to the Chinese badminton player.
The match was tight at the start of the first game. Chasing points, Jonathan, who was 7-10 behind, won four points in a row to lead 11-10 at the interval.
A straight smash to Lu’s right gave Jonathan an 18-14 lead. Jonathan then reached game point at 20-15.
However, Jonathan had difficulty finishing the game straight away while Lu won four points in a row to close the gap. Jonathan finally secured the first game 21-19 after Lu’s shot came out.
Jonathan quite often made his own mistakes in the second game which made him fall behind Lu. Jonathan was behind 10-11 at the interval.
Towards the end of the second game, Lu pulled away and left Jonathan trailing 12-18. Lu even reached game point at 20-16. Even though he was able to get close to getting three points, Jonathan ultimately failed to stop Lu.
Jonathan spent most of the start of the third game in a chasing position. He was finally able to overtake Lu to lead 11-10 at the interval by winning four points in a row.
However, Lu responded by winning seven points in a row to take a 17-11 lead. Jonathan was able to stop Lu’s streak of points and came closer to winning three points.
Jonathan can get closer to 18-19. However, one mistake made Lu reach match point. Even though he was able to delay Lu’s victory, Jonathan ultimately lost 19-21 after his shot at the ball in front of the net was not perfect and went out.
Jonathan Christie is the champion of the Indonesia Masters 2023. Last year, he climbed to the highest podium after defeating Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo in the final.
