Jonas Vingegaard’s Phenomenal Time Trial Performance and UAE’s Perfection Shortcomings

Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard couldn’t get rid of each other for two weeks. Evenly matched in an exciting game of seconds for yellow in Paris. That scenario was suddenly disrupted in the time trial by a phenomenal swipe from the Danish yellow jersey wearer. They also looked for explanations in Vive le Vélo. “Vingegaard was simply sublime.”

Uphill, Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar balanced each other. It was therefore surprising that the difference in time trial would suddenly be so large. Tom Dumoulin had not seen it coming either.

“Time trial is of course a completely different discipline than what we have seen in the past two weeks. Crazy things often happen there. But no one could have imagined that it would be a hammer blow of more than a minute and a half. Not even Vingegaard. Also Pogacar no. Everyone was amazed.”

“We witnessed the best time trial ever in cycling. First of all because of the lead that Vingegaard takes over the rest. But I also watched his descent and his flat parts and that was real time trial porn. It was fantastic to to see.”

“He took a lot of time uphill, his power must have been incredibly high. But also his descents and his cornering, it was just sublime.”

Vingegaard did not shy away from the risks in the descent. “Isn’t that daring?” Karl Vannieuwkerke objected. Dumoulin doesn’t see it that way.

“It didn’t feel like a risk to me. It didn’t feel that way to him either. It was perfection. He tilted his bike, but he had so much control over his bike. Sometimes you have those days when everything is right and that is a fantastic feeling.”

A hammer blow of more than a minute and a half, no one could have imagined that. Not even Vingegaard. Neither does Pogacar. Everyone was amazed.

“The choice for the bicycle change was very debatable”

A hymn by Tom Dumoulin for Jonas Vingegaard. For Tadej Pogacar, the 2017 Giro winner is more critical.

“I didn’t think he was great driving. It was not like La Planche des Belles Filles in 2020. Then he had a higher pedaling frequency, now he rode a bit heavier. And I found the choice for a bicycle change very debatable.”

Pogacar lost 7 seconds at the switch itself, but the time loss was of course higher to get back into the right cadence. “You get all the speed out until you stop and then you have to get back up to speed,” says Dumoulin.

“You interrupt your rhythm. You may be stressed for miles in advance, the mechanic too. If it was a real climb like La Planche des Belles Filles, then of course it is possible. But today it turned out not to be the right choice for the riders who switched. I didn’t see one pull out on his road bike.”

“We don’t know his motivation for switching bikes. Maybe
does he have a physical problem that made him uncomfortable on that time trial bike?

I didn’t think Pogacar was fantastic to drive. It was not like La Planche des Belles Filles in 2020.

Tom Dumoulin

“UAE is less close to perfection than Jumbo-Visma”

The wrong assessment at UAE broke Pogacar sour, while everything ran smoothly at Jumbo-Visma. Dumoulin praises his former team.

“At the moment, Jumbo-Visma is the best team in the world in everything. They do everything so structured and prepare everything so well, especially on such a time trial day.”

“Vingegaard and Van Aert’s bicycles are even made without paint in order to save 150 grams.”

“I have the feeling that at UAE they are just a little less close to that perfection. All things considered, it does make a difference. But to be clear, not a minute and a half. Those were mainly Vingegaard’s legs.”
