Jonas Vingegaard did excellent business on Wednesday in the third stage of the Tour of the Basque Country. The Jumbo-Visma rider was the strongest in a chaotic finish on a tough hill. In addition to the stage win, he also took the lead in the standings.
The chaos started when Sergio Higuita was driven into the gates on the steep closing meters by Juan Pedro López. Higuita in turn reacted by giving López a push, after which the thinned peloton broke in two.
In the tumult that ensued, Richard Carapaz fell off his bicycle. Vingegaard saw it all happen, was able to take full advantage and took the stage victory. Mikel Landa finished second two seconds behind Vingegaard and Enric Mas rounded out the top three.
Thanks to his stage victory, 26-year-old Vingegaard takes over the leader’s jersey from Ide Schelling. The 25-year-old Dutchman booked another phenomenal stage victory in the Basque Country on Tuesday and also took the lead in the standings.
Landa is second in the general classification, five seconds behind Vingegaard. David Gaudu is 16 seconds behind in third place.
The Tour of the Basque Country has six stages and lasts until Saturday. Unlike previous years, no time trial has been included in the stage schedule.
