Lommela (Belgium), Aug. 1, LETA. Latvian motorcyclist Pauls Jonas from the “Gas Gas” team took third place in the MXGP class of the World Motocross Championship on Sunday in the sixth stage – the Flemish “Grand Prix”.
In the first race, Jonas won the fourth place, but in the second he finished in the second position, ranking 40th in the overall standings with 40 points.
First, a qualifying race took place on Sunday, in which Jonas showed the seventh best result, but the fastest was Slovenian Tim Gayser.
At the start of the first race, Jonas won the third place, only in the last lap allowed the Italian Antonio Cairoli to overtake himself.
The winner was the Dutch Jeffrey Herling, who overtook the Frenchman Roman Fever.
In the second race, Jonas won the second place after the start, giving way only to Fevram. Already in the second lap, the Latvian motocross rider became the leader, overtaking Fevra, and drove everyone ahead until the 11th lap, when the Frenchman took the lead again. In this order, they also finished, finishing third in the race for the Spaniard Horhem Prado.
Fevrs won the stage with 47 points, Herlings was second with 41 points, Jonas was third with 40 points.
Geyser is still the leader with 226 points in the overall World Cup. 221 points are for Fevram, 217 for Cairoli and 212 for Prado. Jonas has scored 159 points, which gives him the eighth place.
In the first stage of the season in Russia, Jonas was third in the second race and took eighth place in the sum, in the next two stages he was sixth in Great Britain and Italy, 11th in the Dutch track in Oss, and 13th in the Czech Grand Prix in Loket.
Slovenian motorcyclist Tim Gayser was crowned MXGP champion for the third time last year, but Jonas, who suffered a serious injury in the summer, was ranked 31st.
There are 18 stages in the MXGP class this season. The end of the season is planned for December 5 in Indonesia, but the next stage is planned for August 8 on the Latvian track in Ķegums.
In the MX2 class, where Latvians did not participate, Belgian rider Jago Gertts won with 47 points.
In the third stage of the European Championship in the 250 cubic centimeter class (EMX250), the 29th place was taken by Latvian motocross rider Mairis Pumpurs. After 13th place in the competition of 37 athletes in the second qualification group, he finished 30th in the first race, and 25th in the second.
In the sum of two trips to Belgium, the Italian Nicholas Lapucci won.
