“You weren’t feeling so well”
One of this week’s guests in “Renées brygga” 2024 is one of Sweden’s most beloved writers, playwrights, comedians and artists, Jonas Gardell. During the episode, he shares how he went about overcoming his self-hatred.

That’s how Jonas Gardell got over his self-hatred
One of the week guests in the immensely popular and summery talk show Renée’s bridge 2024 on TV4 is none other than Jonas Curtain. Since his debut as a writer in 1979, Gardell has written a number of novels, TV and film scripts, shows and song lyrics. As if that wasn’t enough, he is also one of Sweden’s most loved comedians, playwrights and artists.
Yes, there is no doubt that Jonas has many strings to his lyre, and despite his impressive career, he has had to struggle with loving himself exactly as he is. During the ask section Renée Nyberg Jonas if he has become more or less vain now that he has passed 60 years.
– So, the thing is like this. I’ve gone from every time I looked in the mirror I used to always say “damn you’re ugly, damn you’re ugly”, to the reflection. And it wasn’t as much fun as I first thought, it was quite, well, you didn’t feel so good about it. So I thought, now I’m going to try not to say “damn you’re ugly” to the mirror, and I’m going to try not to say no when people give me a compliment, I’m going to say thank you. And the next step, that’s what I’ve started to take now, is to say “thank you, I know”, it’s great and it’s almost like it’s forbidden to say, says Jonas while he shines like a sun.
