Jonas Gahr Støre: – New message to the protesters

HELSINKI (Dagbladet): – They have been heard. And I have respect for the commitment, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre to Dagbladet.

During the SAMAK summit in Helsinki, Støre comments on the recent days’ demonstrations in Oslo.

Dozens of activists, many of them Sámi, are protesting that the wind turbines at Fosen in Trøndelag are still standing. It has been a year and a half, 500 days, since the Supreme Court concluded that the turbines violate the rights of indigenous people.

Must be terminated as soon as possible

– Do you want to take any form of self-criticism because this has taken so long?

– I understand the impatience, and I share it. It is a big and important topic that we have to decide in a good and orderly way, says Støre.

He says that it must happen through agreement on what should be the basis for making a new decision.

On Tuesday, the Fosen demonstrations were extended to the Ministry of Finance. After a few hours, the demonstrators were lifted away by the police. Video: Magnus Paus. Reporter: Siri Åbø Wiersen / Dagbladet

– I will be open to conversations with all concerned to get this finished as quickly as possible, says Støre.

Interprets the judgment differently

He will not go into detail on what the solution will be. But when asked if he wants to guarantee that the wind turbines will be removed, he replies:

– The Supreme Court judgment does not conclude that, says Støre.

He points out that the wind power plant is the largest in Europe and supplies Trondheim with the necessary renewable energy.

– It is not a simple question. But we have a judgment in the Supreme Court that we must take seriously, and we will, says Støre.
