Jonas Edward Salkwas an American medical researcher and virologist, recognized for his discovery and development of the first vaccine against poliomyelitis.

He was born in New York on October 28, 1914.

His investigations of a flu vaccine in 1940 led him to develop an inactivated vaccine. against polio in 1952.

After verifying the success in the world, the vaccine was distributed in the United States and contributed to reduce the disease.

He died in La Jolla, California, on June 23, 1995.
