A social psychology expert from the University of Indonesia (UI), Roby Muhamad, assessed the visit of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to Ukraine and Russia is a first attempt to reconcile the two countries in conflict. Jokowi’s visit is said to have just ‘opened the door’.
“Well, now this is a stepping stone for how Pak Jokowi is dealing with the big egos of the leader, starting with the mention of the G7, the developed countries and then with President Zelensky in Ukraine and then President Putin in Russia. Well, this is a start, a PDKT with the world’s big egos. So this PDKT is the first step, so the first visit just opens the door,” said Roby in the Perspective Battle with the title ‘The Political Impact of Jokowi’s Peacemaker’ held detik.com and Total Politics, Wednesday (6/7/2022).
“So, in my opinion, we are here that the fact that President Jokowi is able to establish a relationship that is almost accepted by all the great leaders in the world today is a pretty strong signal to the Indonesian public that there is something new here, namely Indonesia. with Pak Jokowi,” he added.
Roby said Jokowi’s initial efforts in Ukraine and Russia were important. According to him, the visit to Ukraine and Russia became history because Jokowi entered the ‘field’ of great world leaders.
“This shows that Indonesia is in the arena of great leaders. This is a historical moment of history with all its drama, it is part of history that Indonesia is now accepted as being in the arena of great leaders in this world,” he said.
He said that Jokowi’s visit which brought a peace mission could not be judged as a success or failure in a short time. Because, according to him, diplomacy is a process.
“Yesterday to Kiev, to Moscow, the first round, maybe there will be a second round, maybe in November in Bali we will see what happens. This is still the next round, not just one round,” he added.
Furthermore, Roby also mentioned the success of Jokowi’s political diplomacy regarding the import of COVID-19 vaccinations. According to him, Jokowi’s success in overcoming COVID-19 in Indonesia will be the main topic of discussion at the G-20 regarding the development of a global health governance system.
“So Indonesia was successful in dealing with COVID and wanted to take it to the global level, then suddenly there was a Russia-Ukraine war. But Indonesia is already on the global stage because of the 20th presidency. He is an extraordinary politician whose level is now trusted not only at the level of general chairmen of political parties in Indonesia, but at the level of presidents of major countries in the world,” he said.
“So this is how we show it, Pak Jokowi, can it? raise a heavy burden too. In the past, he was still emaciated, still new, before his opponents were still political parties, the head of political parties in Indonesia. Now, 80% of it is controlled, Pak Jokowi is more confident, the political muscles are stronger,” he added.
