The Joko “Jokowi” Widodo administration in Indonesia has always had a fractured power bloc consisting of different social, political and business interests. This has resulted in ruling elites clashing over critical state policies and flip-flops and U-turns being common. However, the recent COVID-19 pandemic has caused the ruling coalition to become more fragmented than ever before, with some factions openly criticizing government responses to the crisis. This has raised concerns about the government’s ability to effectively respond to the pandemic and its overall stability.
