Ahead of the demonstration from the BEM SI Alliance, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) emphasized that the 2024 elections would not be postponed. Even though Jokowi has emphasized that BEM SI, which brings up one of the issues, is the issue of protesting the postponement of the election, he will continue to hold demonstrations.
Jokowi said that the 2024 election would still be held on February 14, 2024 when he chaired a meeting on the 2024 Simultaneous General Election and Regional Head Election with his staff on Sunday (10/4/2022). Jokowi’s directive was broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat’s Youtube account.
The meeting was attended by Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security Mahfud Md, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Pandjaitan, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, Menkum HAM Yasonna Laoly, Menpan RB, State Secretary Pratikno, and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung. There is also the National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, the TNI Commander General Andika Perkasa.
“I think it’s clear, everyone already knows that the election will be held on February 14, 2024. This needs to be explained. Don’t let speculations arise, rumors circulating in the community that the government is trying to postpone the election or speculation about the extension of the presidential term and also which is related to the matter of the three periods,” said Jokowi.
2024 Election Stages
In his directive, Jokowi also conveyed related to the stages of the 2024 General Election. The 2024 Election stages will begin in mid-June 2022.
“The election stages will start in June 2022. In mid-June 2022, it will start,” he said.
Jokowi said that the stages of the election had started 20 months before the vote. This refers to the applicable law.
Therefore, Jokowi said his party would soon inaugurate new KPU-Bawaslu members on April 12. This inauguration is intended so that preparations for the general election and local elections in 2024 can begin.
Jokowi will also talk to KPU-Bawaslu regarding this preparation. The reason is, Indonesia has never had the experience of simultaneous elections and regional elections.
“That’s why later we need to talk with KPU-Bawaslu about this preparation so that preparation for the general election and regional elections has never had simultaneous experience, we can really prepare it carefully,” explained Jokowi.
