Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has made a decision by temporarily banning the export of palm oil products officially starting Thursday (28/4/2022) at 00.00.
On the same occasion, Jokowi also said he would lift the ban on exports of cooking oil and cooking oil raw materials if domestic needs have been met.
“Once domestic needs have been met, of course I will lift the export ban. Because I know the country needs taxes, foreign exchange, a trade balance surplus. But meeting the people’s basic needs is an important priority,” Jokowi said in a press statement via the Presidential Secretariat’s Youtube account, quoted on Monday. (2/5/2022).
The head of state then asked for awareness of the palm oil industry to prioritize and meet the domestic demand for cooking oil.
“If we are all willing and have the intention to fulfill the people’s needs as a priority, domestic needs can easily be met,” said Jokowi.
The head of state highlighted the domestic cooking oil crisis which did not go away even though it had been going on for about four months. Therefore, Jokowi added, it is impossible to allow this condition. This is because various policies have been implemented, but they are still not effective.
“As the largest palm oil producing country in the world, it is ironic that we actually have difficulty getting cooking oil,” said Jokowi.
The prohibition is regulated in the Minister of Trade Regulation No. 22/2022 concerning the Temporary Ban on Exports of Crude Palm Oil, Refined, Bleached and Deodorized Palm Oil, Refined, Bleached and Deodorized Palm Olein, and Used Cooking Oil, set on April 27, 2022.
