Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The number of Covid-19 infections and deaths has increased again in Europe. This time Russia, Ukraine and Romania recorded the highest deaths on the continent, according to the tally AFP, Tuesday (26/10/2021).
About 1,672,000 new cases have been registered on the European continent over the past week, averaging around 239,000 per day. That number increased 18% in the previous week, according to data compiled from official sources in the region’s 52 countries and territories.
The increase in cases was up 60% from August and September, when there were about 150,000 new cases registered per day.
In the region, 42 countries saw an increase in new infections over the past week, and only seven countries saw a decline.
The worst affected countries in terms of total new cases were Ukraine, Hungary and Poland. When calculated by per capita infection rates, Latvia, Estonia and Georgia were hardest hit. Meanwhile, Kosovo, Luxembourg and Malta experienced the steepest declines.
The current number remains below the daily record for the region, which recorded an average of 284,000 cases per day between November 2 and November 8, 2020. But Europe now accounts for 55% of all new cases globally.
Data AFP showed an average of 3,120 daily deaths on the continent in the previous seven days, up 16% from last week.
It is the first time the region’s deaths have exceeded 3,000 daily deaths since May. Although the current number is still far from the record average of 5,735 daily deaths from January 14 to 20, 2021.
More than a third of the deaths recorded in Europe are currently in Russia, which reports an average of 1,051 deaths daily, followed by Ukraine (485 cases) and Romania (420 cases).
In total, Europe has a total of 63,234,020 infections and 1,285,728 deaths, according to Worldometers data.
Jokowi Reminds Indonesians
President Jokowi continues to remind residents to remain vigilant of the potential third wave of Covid-19. Although currently the occupancy rate of beds in hospitals is decreasing, the Covid-19 positivity rate to the effective reproduction rate (Rt) is below the standard set by WHO.
According to Jokowi, the development of daily cases in Indonesia has decreased drastically, from 56,000 positive cases in a day in July 2021, to 802, even 460, in the last few days.
“Then how do we respond to this situation that is getting better? Be careful and never let your guard down. This pandemic is not over yet. This week, the trend of positive cases in the world, such as Europe and South America, has actually increased,” Jokowi said.
He said the upward trend in cases was due to three things: relaxation that was too fast and did not go through stages, health protocols that were no longer implemented in a disciplined manner, and face-to-face learning in schools.
“I ask regional heads to be aware of the slightest increase in Covid-19 cases in their respective regions. I also remind all regional heads to continue to accelerate vaccination to protect the people while encouraging economic growth,” said Jokowi.
