Jokowi says he is not ready to transfer capital from Jakarta to IKN: Just moving a house is complicated, don’t make it easy

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta President Joko Widodo is not ready to move the capital from Jakarta to IKN, Penajam Paser North, East Kalimantan. Jokowi said the president’s order (Keppres) to move the capital of the country to the capital of the islands (IKN) has to look at willingness in the field.

Jokowi said that moving the capital through a presidential decree was not just an administrative matter. But the development process is in the field. “We have to see how ready this movement is. Just moving a house, wow, what a pity, this is moving the capital. Don’t make it easy,” he said at IKN on Monday, August 12, 2024, quoted from a video obtained by Tempo.

The Governor of Jakarta 2012-2014 said that the government had started development in the main area of IKN government. This, said Jokowi, shows his strong desire to complete developments related to the government, including the Presidential Palace.

“We hope this will encourage as many investors as possible to invest in IKN because investing in IKN is an investment for the future, not now. “And please also ask the president-elect,” said Jokowi.

Meanwhile, President-elect Prabowo Subianto was asked about his commitment to building IKN. The Minister of Defense said that if possible, he wanted to finish what President Jokowi had started.

Prabowo said that building the capital city was not a short task. However, he believes that the IKN function will run in the next three to five years.

“I think Pak Jokowi has played a historic role. “It started, at least I will continue if possible, I will be the one to finish it,” said Prabowo, who will head the government with Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka – Jokowi’s son.

Currently, Jakarta still has the status of a capital city, even though the law on the Special Regional Division of Jakarta or DKJ Law, was passed several months ago. The transfer of the national capital from Jakarta to IKN, according to regulations, must be confirmed through a Presidential Decree.

Notice

The signing of the IKN Presidential Decree failed along with speculation regarding Prabowo’s continued doubts about IKN. The reason is that Jokowi’s mega project could burden the state budget. At the same time, Prabowo, who will only be inaugurated as President on October 20, has priority programs, such as free nutritious food.

The government will spend, from 2022 to the end of 2024, a budget of IDR 72 trillion from the APBN for the development of IKN. The IKN Authority has proposed an additional budget of IDR 29.8 trillion for the next year. This proposal was expressed by the Acting Deputy Head of the IKN Authority Raja Juli Antoni during a meeting with Commission II DPR RI.

In RAPBN 2025, the government has prepared IDR 71 trillion to carry out Prabowo’s free food program in phases. Money is temporarily stored in the General State Treasurer’s account because there is no budget item yet.

Political observer Adi Prayitno is skeptical about the future of IKN after President Jokowi’s handover to Prabowo Subianto. Jokowi and Prabowo’s differences in interests regarding future government priority programs are considered to be a stumbling block.

Adi explained that IKN appeared to be used as a statement by Prabowo’s camp for Jokowi so that he could try to implement it later. But in practice there will be problems. Because Prabowo’s main program, such as free nutritious food, requires a large budget.

“It must be admitted that the future of IKN after the transfer of Jokowi to Prabowo is completely dark,” Adi said when contacted on Thursday evening, July 11, 2024.
