The Coordinator of the Working Group or Pokja 30 Buyung Marajo said that Jokowi’s statement was against the reality in East Kalimantan, where IKN is located.
“It’s a lie,” Buyung told him Tempo through a phone call on Sunday, September 29 2024, talking about Jokowi’s statement.
Previously, Jokowi stressed that the decision to move IKN from Jakarta to the islands was in accordance with the provisions. He said the IKN project in East Kalimantan had been fully approved the people. He expressed this in his remarks at the 2024 Baznas National Coordination Meeting, IKN State Palace, on Wednesday, September 25 2024.
“So this is not just the president’s decision, but also the decision of the Indonesian people represented by all members DPR which is in Jakarta. “So that there is no misunderstanding that this is the project of President Jokowi, right,” said Jokowi, quoted from the video of the Presidential Secretariat.
According to Buyung, if the project, which will cost trillions, is approved by the people, it is impossible for violations to occur. He gave an example to the residents of Lango Beach, North Penajam Paser, East Kalimantan whose land was affected by the development of IKN. The place which was earlier covered with palm oil plants is now scraped and reduced to convert it into a VVIP Airport.
In addition, he said, there was also an order to leave the house by the IKN Authority (OIKN) to local residents. On March 8 and 9, 2024, up to 200 residents of RT 05 Pemaluan, East Kalimantan, received letters sent by OIKN. The letter said that the building where they lived was an illegal area and that they had to demolish it immediately.
“The period is not longer than seven calendar days, starting from the date of delivery of this first warning,” said the content of the first warning letter from OIKN on March 4, 2024.
With the sudden ultimatum from OIKN, the native inhabitants of Pemaluan admitted that they felt they were being evicted under the pretext of building a new capital. They were given seven days to “leave” the area where they have lived for decades.

“That alone proves that what our current president said is against that,” Buyung said. “Regardless of the memory of the people of Indonesia, the people of East Kalimantan were never invited chat.”
Pokja 30, a public policy and budget advocacy institution in East Kalimantan, is part of the Land for the People (Titura) Coalition. The coalition held a protest against IKN together with East Kalimantan residents on 17 August 2024 at IKN, before dozens of them were eventually arrested by the police.
Greenpeace Indonesia, which is also part of Titura, said OIKN had previously reached out to residents. OIKN spokesperson, Troy Pantouw, said that there was an outreach regarding the fate of residents’ properties in the IKN construction area from May 2023. This outreach included Sepaku District, Ken North Penajam Paser Regency and in Loa Janan District, Kutai Kartanagara Regency.
However, Greenpeace Indonesia’s Forest Campaign Team Chair, Arie Rompas, said there had been no deeper discussions with local residents. According to him, an approach that is more than just socialization is needed.
“At least in the context of the development of a project that has a wide impact, it is necessary to ensure that all processes are consulted. “We call it meaningful consultation, so it’s not just socialization,” he said. “Greenpeace itself was never invited to discuss the development of this IKN in depth.
